History of money: Brazil
From the first coins to today – and where to find coin dealers.
In colonial times, Brazil used Portuguese coins and Spanish silver. The first mint in Brazil opened in Salvador in 1694, and Brazilian gold from Minas Gerais financed Portugal's 18th-century gold coinage. Brazil kept the réis after independence in 1822.
In 1942 the cruzeiro replaced the réis. Decades of inflation followed, and with them a long series of currencies: the cruzeiro novo (1967), the cruzado (1986), the cruzado novo (1989), the cruzeiro again (1990) and the cruzeiro real (1993).
The Plano Real introduced today's real in 1994 and finally brought stability. Collectors look for colonial and imperial gold coins, silver réis, the many short-lived currencies and some commemorative 1-real coins, such as the 1998 Human Rights issue.
