History of money: Spain
From the first coins to today – and where to find coin dealers.
Spain's silver 'real de a ocho' – the piece of eight or Spanish dollar – was struck in huge numbers from the 16th century, largely from American silver. It became the first truly global trade coin, circulating from the Americas to China, and served as a model for the United States dollar.
Gold escudos and doubloons completed the system. In 1868 Spain introduced the peseta, following the standard of the Latin Monetary Union without formally joining it. The peseta lasted through monarchy, republic and dictatorship until the end of the 20th century.
Spain adopted the euro in 2002 (166.386 pesetas per euro). Collectors look for pieces of eight, gold escudos, early pesetas – whose minting year is often shown in small stars – and silver 100-peseta coins of 1966.
